Removing Window Film
Window film has an inherent problem. Sooner or later, it is going to degrade and you will need to take it off. In this article, we look at how to remove window film with a minimum of fuss.Window film removal is not so much a difficult process as a time consuming one. You might think it is a simple as creating an edge and then pulling the film off. Well, it is. The problem isn’t so much the film, but the adhesive. Any substance that is going to be exposed to the sun day in and day out for years comes with an adhesive that is designed to be incredibly tough and durable. That’s bad news for you!
The first step in removing window film is usually to apply a removal solution. You can buy various products at your local hardware store or megastore. If you must, you can create your own by mixing a small amount of ammonia with water. Regardless, apply a mist of the water to the film. The longer it has been on the window, the more you will need to apply.
Once applied, wait for between 20 and 30 minutes. Next, take a razor blade and create an edge at a top corner. Just cut a line and peel it back. Your goal is to do it at an angle so that you can unpeel the film from the window in a downward motion. Once you have the edge, start peeling. Do not make yanking motions as you may break the glass. If the film is incredibly hard to remove, stop and reapply solution. If you keep pulling, you may pull the glass out of the slash or at least loosen it which will result in water leaks and such.
Once you get the film off, you can try spraying and sponging off the remaining adhesive. It will usually help, but isn’t going to be a cure all. Sooner or later, you are going to have to hunker down with the razor and start going inch by inch across the glass. I suggest getting a high chair so you don’t destroy your back. If you start getting tired, take a break. Razor blades can do a lot of bodily harm, so take your time. The window isn’t going anywhere!
How difficult is removing window film? It depends almost entirely on how long the film has been on the window. If it has been there a year or two, it shouldn’t be a difficult project. If it has been there five years or more, you are in for a battle.
