Soundproofing Window Film
Windows can be an area where a lot of noise gets into your home. With this in mind, we get a lot of inquiries about soundproofing window film to take care of the problem. When it comes to sound proofing your windows, there is good news and bad news. Let’s start with the bad news first. There is no such thing as soundproofing window film that actually works as far as we know. There is insulation film that will help a bit, but that is about it. Still, there is no reason to throw your arms up in the air in frustration as there are a couple of other solutions.
The first is the simplest, but most expensive. You need to replace your windows with better versions. Windows can be an expensive, time consuming matter during construction. Unless your home was custom built, the developer’s goal was to get it up as fast as possible. You probably didn’t want to know that, but it is true. Sorry. Given this, the developer used windows that met code, but obviously were not sound proof enough for all the noise in you area. You can solve this problem by upgrading to a sound proof window. A quality window will cut down on 75 to 95 percent of the sound and probably save you money on all that aspirin you’ve been buying for your headaches!
It seems we are all on a budget these days, so let’s look at a less expensive option. There are a number of outfits touting a sound proof window that doesn’t require you to replace the ones on your home. Instead, the new window fits on to the back of the window. It cuts down on the noise pollution by creating an air pocket between the windows. In theory this works, but we’ve never actually tried these so buyer beware. Also, they tend to look strange so you’ll want to take that into account as well.
Is there any truly cheap option out there? Of course. I want you to think vampires. Huh? Vampires can’t stand the sun obviously, so they all use a heavy velvet curtain in every movie to ensure their pale complexion doesn’t get an unwanted tan. You can do the same for noise. A thick, heavy curtain can more or less eliminate noise. This is a perfect solution if the problem is primarily that you can’t sleep at night. It also works during the day, but people might start wondering if you really are a vampire!
Will we ever see soundproofing window film in the future? Technology seems to know no bounds, so we’ll say yes. Currently, however, there really isn’t anything out there that we would recommend. If you find something that really works, please let us know.
