Kids - Window Treatments
Any discussion of window treatments usually centers around fabrics, colors and such. When it comes to treatments in kids rooms, there are other issues to consider.Kids will be kids. As every parent knows, that means they will get into everything and do it in a way that nobody could possibly have imagined. The terrible twos are a lot of fun, but we all know the path of destruction is not limited to just that single year. With this in mind, you need to consider practical issues beyond the normal with these treatments. Chief among them is a safety.
2009 was the year of the second biggest blinds recall ever in the United States. What was the problem? Kids were getting into the blinds and caught up in the strings used to move them up and down or make adjustments. A number of children actually choked to death with is just about the last thing anyone could have expected. The tragedy points out the fact that window treatments in kids room need to be considered carefully.
The blind problem is supposedly being fixed. Personally, I’ll be skipping them with my kids. If it can possibly be broken, my kids can do it so the risk just isn’t worth it. Instead, the primary approach is to go traditional. A safe look is a valance with hanging curtains. The beauty of this approach is there is nothing for kids to get tangled up in. The only issue is really the curtain pull backs you use. Most come with hooks, so you may want to look at a latch option to make sure rough housing doesn’t result in a painful injury.
As far as an overall look, we are talking about the room of children. Dark drapes really are not a good move. We want to go light, airy and even themed to something your kids might like. Of course, you need to keep in mind that they will not like that theme 5 minutes later, but that is childhood for you!
Window treatments for kids need to be practical. Go with something that will be safe and can take a basketball or football flying into them on occasion.
