What is a Window Treatment?

We often hear about different design elements that a window can bring to a home, but treatments aren’t mentioned as much. So, what is a window treatment?

A window can serve a mere practical role of letting light into a home or it can be part of a design masterpiece. Most of us would go with design masterpiece as a selection and rightly so. Alas, a quality window can look great on the outside of a home, but they tend to leave one wanting on the interior. A simple framed window, no matter how nice, is still  just a window. Something more is needed.


A window treatment is often considered to be the solution to bringing out the best in windows. While it is said the right window can revolutionize a bland room, the same can often be said for the right window treatments. A bland white room can become a classic Victorian with pulled back curtains running of a valance. You can literally change a room completely or simply tie into an interior design theme that you already have in mind.

So, what specifically is a window treatment? Well, the answer is somewhat unsophisticated. It is essentially anything that enhances or changes the interior look of a window. This can include anything from curtains to shutters to a cornice. Technically, even doing etchings or applying film to windows is a form of treatment.



The good news is this gives you plenty of license to come up with window treatments that fit your personal taste. The bad news is there are so many to choose from that nailing down a single look can be a real challenge. Make sure to take the time to do plenty of exploring so that you get just the right look. If you get tired of it, hey, you can always change it!
