How To Build A Wood Window Valance

A valance can make a huge difference in the appearance of your windows. So, let's talk about how to build a wood window valance that can take your interior design to the next level.

Let's start with the basics. What the heck is a valance? It is a design piece that sits over the top of the interior of a window. The valance allows one to hide the functional parts of the upper window while also tying the window into the general interior design theme of the room in question. It makes a real difference to the look of the room.

A valance is not a functional piece of the window. The fact it is decorative makes it fairly simple to make. You will want to buy the wood of your choice. With board in hand, make marks for the dimensions you are seeking. Now simply cut out the design using a jigsaw and sand to a fine finish. This piece is known as the cornice. It will form the backing of the visual part of the valance. Hold the cornice up to the window for a confirmation that the sizing is correct.

Next, cut a 45 degree angle into each end of the cornice. You'll want to cut short ends of the same wood to match this angled cut so you have the cornice with end pieces pointing back to the wall next to the window. At this point, you'll need to attach a wood block, usually a 2 by 4 to the back of the cornice. Why? This is going to be the piece you use to attach the cornice to the wall. You need to use glue and nails to attach the cornice to the wall just above the top of the window frame. There is usually a wood header in the wall that runs horizontally and makes a perfect anchor. If not, studs will be running vertically and you can attach the cornice to those.

With the cornice up, it is just a matter of attaching your decorative covering. Some prefer to go with a molding that has a design cut into it. Since a wood window valance is our goal, you can simply cut the pieces in the shapes desired and then coat them with a sealer or other coating as you desire. Let them dry completely, attach and you are finished.

Building a wood window valance sounds tougher than it really is. Sizing is really the biggest issue. Do a search through valance images on various sites to get ideas for yours. People have come up with some pretty amazing things and there is no reason that you can't as well.
