Storm Window Prices

Storm windows are a popular choice in some parts of the country where weather can be fierce. In this article, we take a look at storm window prices and other issues.

Your windows are designed to take on normal weather. Many parts of the country do not get normal weather. You might get heat and humidity followed by cold and snow. Over time, the changes between the elements can greatly shorten the life of your windows and also cause your utility bill to go through the roof.

As their name indicates, storm windows are designed for rougher weather. They tend to come in aluminum or wood styles, but we recommend you go with the aluminum. Regardless, these windows typically fit outside of your current windows. This creates a gap of air between the two windows. The storm versions are designed to cut down on the condensation collecting in this gap. This has to effects. First, it creates a layer of air insulation that will cut your energy bill since less heat will escape. Second, it creates a dry buffer that will greatly reduce the wear and tear on your “normal” windows, particularly if they are wood.

Storm window prices range dramatically depending on whether you go with wood, aluminum or something custom. Aluminum versions can range anywhere from $25 a piece on up to $200 or more. Wood versions tend to run higher. With either version, make sure to factor in the installation kit. Some come with everything you need while others require you to buy them separately.

What about custom storm windows? Well, the word custom has a secondary meaning – expensive! A custom product requires a tradesman to build it from scratch and that should be setting off dollar signs in your mind. Depending on the size and shape of the window, this can be a nightmare or only slightly more than traditional storm windows. Make sure to get an estimate before hand.

Are storm windows worth the price? Absolutely! They will add ten to twenty years to the life spans of your windows, which more than makes up for their cost.
